  • About Pune

Pune (pronounced /ˈpuːneɪ/, Marathi/Hindi: पुणे, also transcribed as Poona) is the second largest city in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the 8th largest urban agglomeration in India with a population of 5 million, and serves as the administrative capital of Pune district. It is situated 560 meters above sea level on the Deccan plateau, at the confluence of the Mula and Mutha river. The nearest port is Mumbai, 150 kilometers to the west. Pune rose to prominence in the 17th century as the seat of the Peshwe, the prime ministers of the Maratha empire. After the town was brought under the control of British India in 1817, it served as a cantonment town and as the "monsoon capital" of the Bombay Presidency. In independent India, Pune is known for its educational facilities, having more than a hundred educational institutes and nine universities, as well as its growing industrial facilities in IT and Automotive fields.
